My Review:
I don't think I have ever felt this many emotions or connected to the characters in a book as much as I have whilst reading Queens of Geek. I immediently knew I was going to enjoy this book as soon as I read it was set at a convention called SupaCon as I have always wanted to go to ComicCon. Also, since I am Australian I was able to relate to all three main characters as they all live in Australia.
I love how Jen Wilde was able to bring Youtube and Tumblr into this novel. Social media is such a massive part of everyone's lives in todays society, so being able to relate to having a fan account and obsessing over your favourite books in a book is such an amazing thing. Jen has done such a fantastic job discussing many important topics that we don't get to see too often in young adult fiction. Reading about Taylor's battle with anxiety was remarkably inspirational and similar to how I have felt before. The way Jen Wilde wrote certain passages in Queens of Geek made me feel like everything I had been experiencing had finally been put into words. Taylor's character development from start to end was awesome. It shows how little or how much it will take people to realise how being you is amazing and something you shouldn't be afraid of.
The diversity of Charlie's character was great. I loved how comfortable she was with being bisexual and how her storyline wasn't just focused around her sexuality. Reading about someone being a youtuber and dealing with all the pros and cons was very enjoyable and I believe Jen got it pretty spot on (not that I'm a youtuber). Another aspect that I appreciated was Charlie and Taylor's friendship. The way they are willing to put their own problems aside for each others struggles in life no matter how big or small they are is admirable and something I bet a lot of people wished they had.
The relationships in Queens of Geek were done really well. In my opinion there was just enough romance and for once I wasn't solemnly focused on the love interests. I definitely enjoyed reading about Taylor and Jamie as well as Charlie's past and future loves, but I was so deeply immersed in the storyline and the rising action of other problems going on within the book to think mostly about the love aspect.
In conclusion, I have thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience of Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde and the only negative comment I have about this novel is that I wanted more! I'm very grateful to have been sent this by Pan Macmillian Australia and I look forward to reading and reviewing more of their publishings. I highly recommend Queens of Geek for any fangirl/fanboy who is in need of a lift-me-up or/and some motivational quotes that make you want to embrace who you truly are!
